For Trekking Atlas Mountains you need to prepare as you would for walking in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (autumn through late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind you; carry out what you carry in.

Atlas Treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of basing yourself in Berber Guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On mule treks you usually have the choice of staying in Berber Guesthouse/with families or wild camping in 2-person tents. In addition to regular packing, here is a Check List for Atlas Trekking:

  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for camp/guesthouse
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers / rain-pants
  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Trekking pants
Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech - Asni - Imlil

You will be picked up in your Hotel or Riad in Marrakech in the morning and head direction High Atlas mountains. Stop on the way in Tahanaout to enjoy a panoramic view over the valley full of olive trees and an ancient Berber village to take some nice pictures. During the drive to Ouirgane, you’ll experience the beautiful landscape with the traditional Berber villages in the green valleys. If you like, you can visit a local women’s Argan oil co- operative and buy some nice souvenirs. You will pass by at a local family’s home to see how they live and work in the small mountain villages and to enjoy some freshly brewed mint tea.

Soon you’ll arrive at Imlil, which is the starting point for multiple day trekkings to Jebel Toubkal, the second highest mountain in Africa. Your local guide is already awaiting you for a scenic 1 hour walk around the village and surroundings of Imlil. If you don’t feel like walking, you can relax and enjoy panoramic views on a terrace in the village. Lunch is served in a rural guest house from a local family.

Return transfer to Marrakech and drop off at your Hotel or Riad in the medina in the late afternoon.
